Nikki German Shepherd Dog Young Female in Columbia, Missouri

My story
Meet NikkiThis is Nikki. I also call her "Horsey" because she is so tall - 29 inches from the floor to her shoulders!I also call her Horsey for another reason, but we'll get to that. We've come to the part of the bio were people either want to hear all the great things - she's loving, a goofball comedian, watches tv on the couch, and super playful - or get all the bad things out of the way - she grew up in a shelter-like environment from puppyhood until she came to her foster home and didn't have an opportunity to socialize with the world during her critical puppy stages. Lucky for you, I'm going to give you the not so great things with the silver lining. She needs to be crated and her crate is HUGE. Trust me, it takes up a lot of space. But she loves her crate and it's her safe place. When she gets scared, she runs right to her crate and comes back out when she's ready to be curious and brave.Speaking of getting scared, she spooks like, you guessed it, a horse. Ever see a spooked horse? Just imagine a spooked horse that looks like Nikki. That's what happens. The silver lining? She is getting braver and more curious every day. She is on daily medication that helps her anxiety and makes for a lot less spooked horse moments.Things that spook Nikki include loud noises. If you have loud hobbies or drop pots and pans when you cook, she might not be the dog for you. But she loves quiet hobbies and is a perfect lady during Scrabble games. She doesn't even steal dropped letters!Nikki is not meant for city life. Cities are loud and scary and car rides cause stress poop. I promise you don't want to clean that out of your car. She's a big girl. It was a lot of poop. Nikki is doing amazing in a rural home with lots of room to run and play. It's a quiet and predictable life and she's loving it.Since I mentioned playing outside, she absolutely has to have a fenced yard. If Nikki spooks, she has an adrenaline fueled fight or flight response and will run. I don't know how long it would take to find her, but I would guess awhile. The good news is that you can safely play all the fetch and running games you want with her safely in your amazing fenced yard. You can also have a backyard fire pit and not have to try to find her in the dark to make sure she didn't wander off. Thanks, fence!Absolutely no dogs. Not being able to interact with other dogs at a young age can make a dog unfriendly to other dogs. When she sees a dog, her brain goes to attack mode. The good news? The daily anxiety medication helps slow her brain so you have time to walk her away and get her attention before she gets to attack mode. She is getting much more comfortable seeing other dogs in the distance. She has a lot of hair. If you don't want a lot of dog hair in your house or on your furniture, she is definitely not for you. But she likes being brushed and lets me constantly pick at her tufts of hair. It's addicting. You should try it.Seriously, this dog is great. Given a quiet rural home and time to get to know you, you will have a wonderful companion. She will keep you constantly laughing at her antics and is as sweet as can be. If you've gotten this far reading and you believe you might have the right home for her, you might just have the patience to give her the time she needs to settle into your home and family.
